Shane + Colm home grown

We were honoured to be featured on RTÉ One’s Home Grown, a programme that shines a spotlight on Irish businesses making an impact in food, farming, and sustainability. Airing on St. Patrick’s weekend, the episode provided a national audience with a behind-the-scenes look at Arigna Group’s transformation from a traditional fossil fuel company into one of Europe’s most innovative producers of biochar.

From Black to Green

Our story is one of renewal. Once known for producing smokeless solid fuels, Arigna Group has spent the last decade and a half reinventing itself to meet the demands of a changing world. Today, we operate one of Europe’s largest biochar plants, using advanced pyrolysis technology to turn agricultural byproducts into a powerful tool for climate action and soil regeneration.

This transition reflects not only a technological evolution but a deep-rooted commitment to sustainability, circular economy principles, and supporting Ireland in building resilience from the ground up.

Biochar: Innovation with Impact

In the Home Grown feature, viewers saw how biochar—our flagship product that is used also to product our domestic heating product Harvest Flame—offers a sustainable solution for horticulture, soil health, and carbon sequestration. When added to soil, biochar improves water retention, enhances nutrient availability, and stores carbon for hundreds of years.

The episode also highlighted how this innovation is helping Irish horticulturists reduce their environmental footprint while boosting crop productivity, marking a significant step toward more regenerative agricultural practices.

“By transforming agricultural byproducts into a valuable resource, we’re not just innovating—we’re creating real climate solutions,” said Brendan Layden, Managing Director of Arigna Group.

A Proud Moment for Arigna and Irish Sustainability

Being featured on Home Grown, especially over St. Patrick’s weekend, was a proud moment for our team and our community. It provided a national platform to showcase the meaningful work being done in rural Roscommon and reaffirmed that Irish businesses can be leaders in global sustainability efforts.

We’d like to extend our thanks to RTÉ, Bord Bia – The Irish Food Board, and the production team for helping share our story. And to everyone who tuned in—go raibh míle maith agaibh!
